Hibiscus 'o' Bunga Raya

Pictures of a hisbiscus solely grown in a little pot blooming graciously in the garden of mine. I can't wait to show it to mum once she's back from her holiday, just in case the flower will 'fall asleep' before mum could see it. Anyway, hmm... I wonder what species does it belong too?????

Hibiscus or Rosemallow, a large genus of about 200-220 species of flowering plants (wow...too many) aka Queen of the Tropics

Kingdom Plantae
Division Magnoliophyta
Class Magnoliopsida
Order Malvales
Family Malvaceae
Genus Hibiscus

The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothe or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, ranging from white to pink, red, purple or yellow, and from 4-15cm broad. The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule splits open at maturity.

Hibiscus rosa-senensis (Bunga Raya or "Chinese hibiscus") - the national flower of Malaysia (my country).
Hibiscus brackenridgei (Ma'o hau hele) - the state flower of Hawaii.
Hibiscus syriacus (Mugunghwa or "Rose of Sharon") - the national flower of South Korea.

Bunga Raya, official symbol of Malaysia.......
" The flower was chosen to be the naional flower in 1960s by Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

The five-petaled Hibiscus rosa-sinenses was chosen above many varities of the hibiscus because it's the most symbolically relevant. The five petals of the Bunga Raya symbolise the Rukunegara (the Five Prinicples of Nationhood), while the colour red represents courage.

It is also believed that the flower fist arrived in Malaysia via trade from its original home in the Far East sometime before the 12th century. "

A legend of hibiscus in South Korea.....
" There once was a beautiful woman who had a natural talent for writing & singing lovely songs. The people of the village loved her because of her grace & beauty, but this woman had a husband who was blind. No matter, this woman cared deeply for her husband & loved him. There were many of rich & powerful men in other village who wished to have her as theirs but the woman refused their proposal, for she was strong-minded & sincere.

One day, the rich lord of this village came riding on the back of his horse to inspect the people of his land. As he marched through the village, he saw the beautiful woman of the village & immediately fell in love with her. He proposed his love to her & asked her to come & live with him, but again, she refused. No matter how many times he tried, she still refused his proposal. Finally, angered from her stubborness & her sincere, strong mind, the lord sent minions & kidnapped her. the lord again tried everything to please her but she refused & kept her sincerity Furious & angry, the lord finally executed her. The village took pity of this & took her body & buried it next to the house of where she & her blind husband used to live.

Brokenhearted, the blind husband & mourned of the loss of his wife & never left her grave. Months later, a beautifully sweet flower grew & grew around the grave of his beloved wife& his house. the flower is called the Rose of Sharon (mugunghwa).

Rose of Sharon means sincere heart or long lasting due to the fact that it blooms every year after year. "
